This unit explores the interrelation between language and cultures and the role of language in communication across cultural boundaries. It draws on the discipline of sociolinguistics and on intercultural communication studies, and explains associated research approaches. Main concerns are: language and language behaviour as a reflection of cultures and subcultures; language as bridge or barrier in the global environment; and issues in multilingual societies and linguistic imperialism. Students will complete research assignments of an analytical and comparative nature. This unit will be taught in combined teaching with Language, Cultures and Communication (7546).
