The table lists Young’s modulus, Ecomposite, for a glass-filled epoxy composite. The material consists of a volume fraction Vf of glass particles (Young’s modulus, Ef, 80 GN m–2) dispersed in a matrix of epoxy (Young’s modulus, Em, 5 GN m–2). Calculate the upper and lower values for the modulus of the composite material, and plot them, together with the data, as a function of Vf. Which set of values most nearly describes the results? Why? How does the modulus of a random chopped-fiber composite differ from those of an aligned continuous-fiber composite?
