The structure shown to the right consists of a moment resisting frame with a diagonal pin-ended brace. Member properties are EA = 1000 kips, El = 172,000 kip-in2. The member properties and frame geometry are such that one-half of the applied lateral force F is resisted by the diagonal brace and one-half by the moment frame, resulting in the distribution of base reactions shown. Calculate the lateral displacement of the frame if F = 10 kips.

2. For the structure shown below, calculate the movement of node A (in all three DoFs) if a horizontal load of 10 lbs is applied. The flexural stiffness of each member is El = 10 kip-in'. Assume EA >> EI.

3. Calculate the nodal displacements and internal forces (axial, shear and bending moment) for the structure shown below. Both members have the same flexural stiffness, EI, and you can neglect axial and shear deformations. Note — you can solve the problem in terms of El, L and w, or use El = 100,000 kip-in2, L = 150 inch, and w = 2 kip/in.
