Satellite Network End to End Communication Challenges

The primary limitation of terrestrial cabled networks (such as the copper and fiber networks managed by telecommunications companies) is that they are unable to provide service on a global scale. For this reason, satellite networks (which do provide global access) have been leveraged for many years to provide voice communications, and now that they are capable of handling modern bandwidth demands, are also being used to provide transport for data communications on a global scale. Unfortunately, even with the technology advances that have enabled additional bandwidth capability in satellites, there are still many challenges to overcome before this technology can be used effectively for all types of data applications (and specifically those that are sensitive to network delays).
