Criminological theories can provide us with a better understanding of corrections because they provide background knowledge including different social variables that maybe helpful in understanding and explaining why someone commits a crime and enters the correctional system.
Social learning theory provides insight regarding the reasons why some people commit offences that lead to their incarceration. Brauer and Tittle state that the social learning theory specifies how people learn these deviant and non-deviant behaviours and the cues (or definitions) that trigger them through a process of differential reinforcement, as found in the psychological principles of operant conditioning (p. 158). They also indicate that a persons likelihood to offend is increased when they associated with others who offend and exhibit deviant behaviour.
Brauer and Tittle also state there are four major concepts of the social learning theory. These four concepts are differential association, differential reinforcement, modeling and definition. Differential association theory uses two of these concepts; definition and differential association. This theory states that individuals are presumed more likely to commit crime when they associate with criminal patterns and when they learn cognitive definitions (which are interpreted as behavioral stimuli) favorable to crime (p.158).
The theories of social learning and differential association are both helpful in strengthening and understanding corrections because by understanding the reasons that crime is committed, it can allow us the opportunity to potentially find ways to prevent it. Criminological theories allow us to look at the corrections system from the individual and societal level. Understanding why people offend can help with the design of effective treatment methods to potentially reduce the recidivism rate and offer specific treatment to those state raised offenders.
