Determine (a) the rate of heat generation at the weld and (b) the volume rate of metal welded for welding low-carbon steel plates by two welding processes; the first is shielded metal arc-welding operation performed at a voltage = 25 volts and a current = 150 amps. The heat transfer factor = 0.90, and the melting factor = 0.75. The second is gas metal arc welding performed at a welding voltage = 25 volts, current = 200 amps, and heat transfer factor = 0.90, and the melting factor = 0.627. The melting temperature of low-carbon steel = 1487?C, and the unit melting energy can be determined by the methods you learnt in class. Hence, determine the travel speed required for both cases of the weld bead = 32.25 mm2. Assume the weld bead is all from the filler metal. Comment on your answer by comparing all results in a, b and c and explaining the differences between all values in view of the process description. [15 marks]
