Q.1: Taking nodes at A, B C and D of the 2D plane frame shown in the figure, identify the nodal
unknowns (DOF) of the structure and write the nodal displacement vector for the following cases.
(i) Axial deformation of the members is considered.
(ii) Axial deformation of the members is neglected.
Calculate the nodal load vector {P} for both cases (i and ii) and the stiffness matrix [K] for the
second case (ii).
Solve the governing equation [K]{X}={P} ([K] and {P} are based on case ii) to calculate the nodal
displacement vector {X}.
Using the values of {X} determine the member end moments (i.e., moments due to nodal rotations
and translations) of all members.
Superpose (numerically add) these moments with the fixed end moments to calculate the final
member end moments.
Draw the bending moment diagram of the structure (show the values at important sections).
