Australia versus the World! How can Australian retailers compete against international retailers?

Prepared by Associate Professor Stella Minahan, February 2014

Many international retailers are entering the Australian market in order to continue to grow sales and profits as their home markets mature. Retailers such as Costco, H&M, Uniqlo, Zara, William-Sonoma and Abercrombie and Fitch are among the many international retailers now operating in Australia.

Australia is a large country with a small population making it difficult for retailers to succeed. Other challenges in Australia include a shortage of good locations, labour and distribution costs. Over the next few years many more international retailers are expected to enter Australia resulting in yet more challenges for local retailers. It is critical that Australian retailers be prepared for this increased competition.

For this assignment you must answer the two questions.

“What challenges do international retailers entering Australia present to Australian Retailers?”

“What can Australian retailers do to ward off the competition from international retailers?”

In answering this question you must demonstrate a good understanding of the factors that deliver retail success. Possible topics include customer focus, price and value, merchandise assortments, location, marketing and promotion, store design, customer experience, and competitive advantage. Your reading for this assignment will provide you with other topics for discussion.

To prepare this report you must read widely in the business, retail theory and trade literature to identify areas where Australian retailers can compete successfully. For example you may look at critical success factors for retailers and evaluate competitive advantage. You need to critically analyse the competitive position of both the local and international retailers. What are the strengths of the retailers? How well is their offer articulated and delivered to the consumer? Can they take sales from other retailers?

Using the references you have read build a report that describes how the Australian retailers can compete effectively and areas where the retailers will have difficulty.

This assignment can be completed with other students (max 3) or individually. You may gain useful insights by working with fellow students, as well as reduce your own work load.

The maximum word limit is 4000 words (not including reference list and title pages). Students who complete the assignment individually have a word limit of between 2500 to 4000 words.

This research paper should be structured with an introduction, body of the report including findings and discussion plus a concluding paragraph.

The format should double spaced, and 12 font with the preset (normal) margins. Please use sub-headings to make your paper flow well. A well researched paper should refer to at least 15 different sources of information.

Make sure that you access peer reviewed academic journals and retail text books to support your findings. Please do not summarize information without giving credit to the source from which it was drawn. Also include a reference list of the sources you used. The Faculty of Business and Law uses the Harvard (in text) referencing system).
