Assignment #7 - Who's in Control?
This assignment explores the importance of control in every aspect of our daily lives. I hope you'll find it somewhat fun, and that it will enable you to view control in a positive context.
1. (20 points) Think about any process: buying groceries, withdrawing money from an Automatic Teller Machine (or a live teller at the bank), driving a car, attending Penn State, baking a cake, etc., performing one of your job functions, writing a team paper, etc. Feel free to be creative! Briefly describe the process, including the goal or objective to be achieved;
2. (10 points) List and describe every possible control which helps govern the process. Categorize the controls as direct or indirect. It may be helpful for you to delve back into MGMT 301 and categorize even further as feedforward, concurrent, or feedback controls. (Hint: you'll probably want to cite the text here!)
3. (10 points) Consider "culture" in the process and its controls. Are there any aspects of the control process which might be jeopardized if the individual participating in the process was from a different culture? List and describe potential difficulties which might arise. For example, if you were baking a cake in Denmark, you might have difficulties in ensuring you have the proper ingredients (particularly if you're not fluent in Danish!), and you'd probably have to convert the measurements and temperature. Would this jeopardize the finished product? Trust me, I've been there and have a long list of cooking disasters to prove it does!!!
4. (10 points) Pick just one control and explain what would happen if it failed. What would the consequences be? Is it possible to achieve the intended goal or objective if the control fails?
