Going with the religious explanations, every individual believes that heaven and hell are for ‘good’ and ‘bad’ souls respectively. Therefore, it is a common human perception that hell signifies torture. It is where people are punished after death for all the morally wrong actions. However, in the present play, Sartre through its character Valet, has satirically presented the facilities of hell, where despite of having a stable place to reside the souls were not happy. For example, in a conversation with Valet, Garcin asks for mirror and toothbrush. Valet has just replied with a smiling gesture and stated the phrase ‘To live, did you say?
An understanding can be drawn from the prior evaluation that it is not necessary to punish the sinful souls with any dreadful torture after death; conversely, guilt, irritation, frustrations and mental nuisance can also be a severe punishment
