The soft clay is overlain by a 3-m thick sand layer and underlain by permeable bedrock. The groundwater table is at the sand-clay interface. A sample of the soft clay was extracted from a depth of 9 m and a 1D consolidation and compression test was conducted. Compression data obtained from the test are shown in Fig. 1.
