The footings for a building have been constructed on a layer of saturated silt. Construction has been delayed for the winter and if the footings are not protected, the silt is expected to freeze to a depth of 1.0 m beneath the footings. Assuming that volume expansion is due to the phase change of water to ice and occurs only in the vertical direction, calculate the magnitude of frost heave (in mm) if the footings are not protected. Assume the following properties: - Void ratio = 0.7 - Specific gravity of solids = 2.65 - Specific gravity of water = 1.0 - Specific gravity of ice = 0.9 and Calculate Volume of Solids, the volume of water, the volume of ice and mass of water, the magnitude of frost heave.
