Jeremy is a 10-year-old boy who has gone from being well behaved and cooperative to aggressive and angry. He appears to have some anger management issues but, as counselling progresses, he tells the counsellor that his parents are constantly arguing and swearing at each other. He tells the counsellor that, at times, he just has to explode so he can feel OK again. He also knows he does not want to explode, as he has been doing, but he does not know what else to do to cope with his family situation.
The case study shows that Jeremys behaviour may be seen as being affected by the tension in his family. The question becomes: Should Jeremy be the client or should the family become the client? Additionally, will Jeremys aggression and anger settle down if the family is helped to manage the tension and fighting between the parents? In counselling, sometimes the identified client may be the one who is letting others know that the family is under pressure.
The purpose of this assignment is for students to apply their knowledge of relevant childhood development theories and interventions to a case study. Students will also evaluate the legal and ethical issues relevant to the case study.
Using the case study of Jeremy provided in Section 1 (under Case Study: Jeremy), students will discuss the process and content of counselling children and young people, and apply relevant child development theories and therapeutic interventions, using references from this unit. The legal and ethical considerations relevant to the case study will also be evaluated.
Your case study should cover the following major points:
An introduction that provides a brief overview of issues to be considered in counselling children and young people.
The range of developmental issues that could be considered in Jeremys case.
The types of therapeutic interventions that might be incorporated in counselling Jeremy.
A discussion of the relevant ethical and legal issues (e.g. confidentiality) that need to be considered in counselling Jeremy.
