David Krasner, who worked for HSH Nordbank AG, complained that his supervisor, Roland Kiser, fostered an atmosphere of sexism that was demeaning to women. Among other things, Krasner claimed that career advancement was based on "sexual favoritism." He objected to Kiser's relationship with a female employee, Melissa Campfield, who was promoted before more qualified employees, including Krasner. How do a manager's attitudes and actions affect the workplace? [ Krasner v. HSH Nordbank AG, 680 F.Supp.2d 502 (S.D.N.Y. 2010)] (See Making Ethical Business Decisions .)

Answer

Meaning of Ethics:

Ethics is set of moral principals a person follows in his general behavior, in simple term ethics is described as a system of moral and principles that is concerned with what is good for individuals and society. A person should always behave as per these rules and principles. Ethics are required at all places whether a person is at home, workplace or in public.

Workplace ethics:

Workplace ethics explains the way employees in an organization should present themselves, their overall work attitude, presence of moral behavior. Ethics are much required in the workplace because it is a non-financial reason which helps the organization in its success because from a good atmosphere many people will attract towards our firm. Some of the ethics which are required at

Workplace are:

  • Fair and Respect:- No matter at which level we are working it is our duty to give respect to every individual working with us.
  • Honesty:- Being an honest individual means we must not give false or mislead information to our customers.
  • Integrity:- One of the most important element is integrity i.e., a person should work with all of its moral values and principles.
  • Discipline:- This behavior is sometimes more important then the talent as it shows how dedicated a person is towards work.
  • Responsible:- An employee should be responsible for all the work assigned to him so that the tasks be complete on time.

Coming to the case law of Krasner v. HSH Nordbank AG, Krasner who was working in an international commercial bank, complained about the atmosphere where his supervisor Kiser engaged in an act of "sexual favoritism" which means he was giving more job opportunities to some of the female workers because of his personal relationship and giving more thank you emails for their work which was even less worthy from a work performed by Krasner and many other male workers. This act is illegal as it is beyond the rules and ethics because every worker should be equally treated.

Manager's attitude affects the workplace because we suppose to do work what we were taught by our superiors. Some of the reasons of how manager's attitude effects the workplace are:

  1. Morale:- Morale explains the way managers treat employees, the way they motivate them, and the goals managers ask employees to achieve. Manager should always keep timely check on employees about how well they are working.
  2. Communication:- It is very important that manager and employee should communicate with each other. Sometimes manager don't convey their thoughts and ideas to employees. Also irregular communication leads to misleading information, missing deadlines and much more.
  3. Equality:- This is one of the most required attitude that manager should possess that it is the duty of him to treat every employee equally, biasness should not be done the basis of gender, color, reputation, or any other. By receiving equal treatment by employees it creates motivation in them for their work.
  4. Performance:- Managers who completes their task using best of their ability typically helps the employees to act same like of their manager. Because people learn from the way their superiors act. A lazy and irresponsible manager makes their employees also lazy at the work.

So a manager behavior affects the workplace in several ways. For a good and healthy workplace primary requirement is that manager should possess all of the ethics so that every worker should feel safe and motivated towards the work.
